Yeah we know it is hard to review a season that half way finished, but we
are getting ready for the future. So far, with the exception of the 04-05
U14 Blues National Run, things have been pretty normal. We begin the season
with the end of their's, along with the new season for most of the other
Blues (05-06) teams. Confused? So are we.

U14 BLUES INVADE ORLANDO
WIN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!
ELMER
EHLERS CUP
Saturday
the 23rd the U14 Blues took off across country to compete for the US
Youth Soccer National Championship. The girls arrived tired Saturday
evening had a heavy training session on Sunday morning followed by an
extensive trip to the Wide World of Disney which may have been enjoyed
more by the parents than the kids. Monday and Tuesday it was back to
business preparing for their first match on Wednesday. Soon there will
be some wild photos posted as several of the kids along with their folks
had digital cameras.
Blues News also just signed a contract with U14 team member Alix Morris
who submitted her personal account of the team's experience. Oh minor
details, the team won the National Championship defeating the awesome
Edmond Soccer Club team from Oklahoma 3-2 in the final moments of the
match in a game that easily could have gone either way.
Of course the competition in Orlando Florida throughout the Nationals was fierce
facing the three regional champions from the North, South, and East. To make
matters worse the girls had to overcome 90 degree heat and summer humidity
which leaves no dry spot on the uniform. Complete National Championship results
can be found on the US
Youth Soccer Web Site. Other than that please check out Alix Morris' account
of events by clicking on her face (right).
JETIX
WORLD CHAMPIONS
While
last year's U14 Blues were getting it done in Orlando, we had some other
Blues travelers representing our club. A group of U12, current U13 Blues
were competing for the Jetix Kids Cup and having won the local competition,
they went onto regionals in California, then onto the National and International
tournament held in conjunction with the MLS All Star game in Chicago.
Read all about it and check out Kelly McKormick's
account of how things went down.
In conclusion of last season; with three teams in state cup finals (U13,
U14, U18), two teams in state cup semifinals (U16 & U17), two state
champs (U9 & U10), one regional finalist (U18), and one regional
and national champion (U14), it was an awesome 2004-2005 on the field
performance by all the Blues teams. Yet with all the success on the fields,
once again keeping our energies focused on our mission as a club; the
best thing to happen this past season was another outstanding class of
graduates (2005). Below you can see the upcoming graduating
class of 2006 and their college choices as they are made. It is important
to once again note that the Blues do not accept credit for the development
of players rather believing players not coaches deserve the credit for
putting in the hard work and sacrifice to develop themselves over the
years. Some of these girls have been with our club for their entire youth
soccer careers, some for many years, and others for a short period of
time. We list them here to celebrate their success and because regardless
of the number of seasons, we are proud they have chosen to graduate as
part of our club.
JESSICA
KRAUSE REJOINS BLUES!
Blues Alumni (1999) and Princeton Grad Jessica Krause from Laguna
Niguel has come full circle and joined the Blues coaching staff.
We are not sure what to think of her career move given her level
of education?
Jessica came right out of the local AYSO and began drinking the
Blues'
"Kool Aide" as a U11 player until her graduation from Capo
Valley HS. She was a member of several talent laden state championship
Blues teams and has tremendous insight to contribute having played
her youth soccer for our club and having gone onto college.
She will be coaching our U9 & U10 girls and while she is a rookie
coach, we have no doubt she will have a significant impact on our
club and players. Thanks for giving back Jess!
SPRING
& SUMMER
TOURNAMENTS
From here on out Memorial Day Tournaments are going to mark the close
of the season with Summer tournaments marking the beginning. Here is
a photo of Mary Naimie's early season U10 (May) team who would eventually
go onto win the state cup. Next to them are the early season U12 Spring
Cup Champions. Now onto the early Summer tournaments. Oh we don't have
the time nor the recollection to comment on each tourney so just enjoy
the photos.

Early
in June Chito started the summer tournament season off with a championship
at the Arsenal Route 66 Tournament winning the U9 Championship. The
U16 Blues went back to back at the Pegasus Cup at UC San Diego defeating
a tough and physical Canadian team. Randy
got in the books with his U17 team as they were crowned champs
of the Slammers Tournament. Rob
Rennie's U11 and Randy Dodge's U13 Blues teams took the Pats Cup.
The first major tournament of the season was the Surf Cup at the end
of July and beginning of August. Of course last year's CYSA-South Girl's
Coach of the Year Mary Naimie's defending State Championship U9/U10
team won the tournament (Above Bottom Right) while Blues News was
busy in Orlando.
(Below) Early August two of our teams (U9 & U14) brought
home the championship from the Long Beach Sun & Surf
Tournament while our
U12 team took a trip up to Danville to win the Mustang Tournament.
The following weekend two teams (U9 & U11) won the local Capo Cup,
while Chris Kale took his state champion U10 now U11 and played them
up at U12; a good move as they came home with the championship from
Encinitas. That same weekend there were at least two teams (Rob's U11 & Chris
Vaught's U12) that won the NHB tournament.

BLUES
CUP
Congratulations
to all involved, this season's Blues
Cup Tournament was another massive
hit. Feedback from participants was 99% positive
with the exception of the complaints you hear at every tournament ever
attended on the face of the soccer planet, "how come we didn't win,
those blind refs". Two Blues teams (U11, U14) won the cup, with
several more in serious contention. In only our forth year, this season's
cup was the most successful ever thanks to relentless work of tournament
administrators, volunteers, the generosity of PUMA, and our parentwork
force. The work that went into making the event happen can't be quantified.
These people put their lives on hold the past two months. Thanks
Joel Swenson (director), Paul Cousineau (fields), Mark Gullickson (marketing),
KristinCooper (publications), Paul Zombolas (scheduling), Dave Mildrew
(club general manager), and so many more!!!
On
a side but no less important note, Blues Cup would like to recognize
Blues Mom Paula Coxe for spearheading efforts to raise funds for Hurricane
Katrina disaster relief through the Red Cross. Paula was the driving
force behind placing and then collecting Red Cross donation cans at all
Blues Cup Tournament Venues. Her efforts were instrumental in collecting
over $1700 for the Red Cross. Paula, thank you for your compassion and
generosity, along with all those who contributed to her effort.
D
REP NAMED ALL AMERICAN!
Not
since Greg Louganis began to dominate competitive diving has the
largest youth sports organization, the Amateur Athletic Union,
held a National Diving Championship. The competition, the first
AAU Nationals in 26 years, took place in Largo, Florida from July
24-31.
Danni Repper, 10, of Laguna Niguel's Crown Valley Divers competed
in the U12 age group and was crowned AAU National Champion on both
the 1-meter board and platform, and placed 2nd on the 3-meter board.
Based on her performance Danni was named to the All-American AAU
National Diving Team and received the first ever Gloria Thompson
Award given to the U12 diver that shows the most control and mastery
of the building foundations and the basic dives for the younger divers.
Back in May 2005, Danni was named to the USA Diving Team that competed
in the US/Canada Challenge held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Danni
won both a gold and a bronze medal in that event.
COAST
SOCCER LEAGUE
Following
the Blues Cup the Coast Soccer League play began and ended along with
older
league cup and results are in. Overall the club compiled an impressive
132-88-47 record for a winning percentage of .66, and four league championships
(U9, U10, U11, U14 Blue).

League Cup championship with both her Blues U10's and U9 Blue team. Two
other teams captured the league cup below Mary and that was Rob's U11
who are now state champs and Tad Bobak's U18 (photos above). The Blues
had a representative from every older age group in the final. Unfortunately
on championship day only our U18 team was able to capture the Cup; nevertheless
to get a team in each championship game was quite an accomplishment for
the club.

Before all the older players went away to high school our teams attended
Thanksgiving Tournaments at the Irvine Harvest and Surf Girl's cup. Rob
guided his U11's to the Surf Championship and in Rob's absence Dido stepped
in to coach Rob's U12 Blue team to the Irvine Harvest Championship. U15
Blues also ended their pre high school season on a high note winning
the Surf Cup.

2005 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
So
you want to play college soccer? Well the NCAA Championships were televised.
Wanting to play in college without knowing what it is all about is like
trying to become an accomplished musician and not having heard the Beatles...ok
we are dating ourselves better yet M & M,
yes we know how to spell his name! The semifinal games were on December
2 and the final was on December 4. Watching games
like this is one of the best educational tools an aspiring player has
to better herself.
One semifinal had Penn State going down in Pk's to Portland with Blues
alumni Lindsey Huie (2001) and Korie Nicholson (2005) while the other
semi will saw Florida State get pounded by UCLA with Blues alumni Michelle
Gleason (2003), Erin Hardy (2005), Stacy Lindstrom (2002), Jenn Sayles
(2004), Caitlin Ursini (2003), Blake & McCall Zerboni
(2005).
This of course set up a Portland vs UCLA Championship showdown which
Portland won to capture their second NCAA Women's Championship. Congratulations
to both teams and the girls, we are proud of you!
WINNING
ON AND OFF THE SOCCER FIELD!
(Left) Mary Naimie's U10 Blues "adopted" a needy family for Christmas. This
endeavor was generously arranged by Blues Dad Brian Hunsaker. The
kids and parents all went shopping at a local department store on Sunday following
their Coast Soccer League Cup championship game, they all bought
gifts, wrapped them, then delivered them to the family after one of their
practices.
The Roth family was able to get a tree donated and they all decorated
it.
(Right) Chris Vaught's U12
Blues recently played the TOPS soccer team. The TOPS team is Cal South's
disabled soccer program.
The Blues girls lined up and gave TOPs players
t-shirts and medals. You would have thought they
had won the
World Cup as they ran off to show their parent their winnings. Chris
set a great example by mingling with the TOPS players, letting each of
them know they are true champions and reminding our girls of how fortunate
they are to have their talent and health.
BLUES PRINCESS
This
year, the Tournament of Roses Royal Court Committee, after interviewing
over 1,100 girls from local high schools and junior colleges,
selected seven princesses to be members of their Tournament
of Roses Royal Court, to attend more than 150 community and
media functions, leading ultimately to the Rose Parade and the Rose
Bowl Game on New Year's Day. Selections were based upon a range of
qualities including public speaking ability, poise, academic achievement,
community involvement and personality.
By Eliza Walper (U18 Blues):
I decided to try out on a whim with a few of my high school classmates; there was virtually no chance of success in this three week process. The process includes interviews of each candidate during a series of five rounds, quarter-final, each round including fewer candidates. The interviews last longer at each round and involve nine judges firing a variety of questions designed to illicit the responses necessary for the judges to make the final choices.
Each round after round I would receive a letter inviting me back to the next session, and each time I was completely surprised. My most memorable was during the quarter-finals when I was asked who my most significant role models were. I said that one of the most significant role models in my life has been my Blues coach, Tad Bobak - not only for, of course, the strategic coaching but more importantly for his personal leadership and integrity.
While my Blues coach got me to the finals, it was one of my teammates, Jacqueline Gantes, that demonstrated the ultimate in teamwork in getting me to the next round. We were scheduled to go on an official visit back east together on a Thursday morning. I had received notice that I was required to have my semi-final interview on Thursday afternoon and would need to either cancel the interview or forgo the visit to my most important college choice. The only way I could do both was to change my existing flight and take the red-eye flight east. Demonstrating true Blues unity, Gantes, encouraged me to keep my final interview and insisted on changing her flight to join me on the red-eye.
I am very excited to adopt my new position in the Rose Court and very much looking forward to representing the City of Pasadena, the Tournament of Roses and of course, I know that I will always be representing the Blues. While the schedule is grueling, I hope that my teammates will indulge me if I miss a few practices over the next few months. Go Blues!
6 BLUES NSCAA "ALL AMERICANS"
Blues News recently returned from the NSCAA Convention in Philadelphia where quite a few cheese steaks were consumed...you don't want to know the rest. Aside from all of the food, one of the major events held at the coaches convention is the annual NSCAA "All American" Luncheon. Three of our youth Blues who play for our U18 team were names all americans along with three Blues Alumni.
KIKKI

KRISTINA
Congratulations go out to Kiara Bosio and Michelle Enyeart who chose to finish up their U18 year with the Blues after coming over from their U18 National Championship team at the LH Eclipse when the majority of their team graduated last season and entered the college ranks. Joining them on the youth all american team is U18 teammate Christina Larsen who has been with the Blues for many years now.
Not to be overlooked were three Blues Alumni who were named to NSCAA Collegiate "All American" Teams. Lyndsey Huie (Portland) picked up Division I honors to go along with her NCAA Championship. Another Division I Honoree was Jaimie Rendich (BYU), and Kim Horn (Santiago Canyon) was also named all american at the Junior College level.
PREPARATION
TOURNAMENTS
Younger Blues teams were busy in late December and
early January competing in tournaments to prepare for state cup. Some
of those tournament champions are listed below along with photos from
teams that have submitted them. Worth noting here are recent Celtic Cup

CLEAN UP WITH HIGH SCHOOL & CIF HONORS
Tesoro
High School finished off one memorable girls soccer season. Not only
did they capture the CIF Division II co championship, several of their
players were also showered with individual awards. The frightening thing
about all this is that it appears the majority of their championship
squad will be returning next season, although rumor has it they will
be moving up a division and will face even tougher competition.
Nicole Romanowski (U17 Blues & 2007 Graduate) who has verbally committed
to Pepperdine was among the many Blues leaders at Tesoro, she was named
Pacific Coast League MVP, CIF Division II Offensive Player Of The Year,
1st Team All Orange County, and to top it off she was one of only two
high school juniors to be named to the 1st Team L.A. Times All Star Team.
Other Blues CIF Honorees were Jaimie Petrossi (U18/USC) Jaimie was also
named to the L.A. Times All Star Team, Lauren Robertson (U17/Ohio State),
Jacqueline Gantes (U18/Yale), Lauren Leslie (U18/San Diego State), Lauren
Matheson (U15), Tori Rocke (U17) Tori was also named to the L.A. Times
All Star Team, Katie Graul (U18) Katie was also named to the L.A. Times
All Star Team, Kylie Wright (U17/UCLA), Lexi Eaton (U17/UC Santa Barbara),
Morgan Skeen (U17/ U of Utah), Division III Offensive Player Of The Year

Rorabaugh (U18), Nadia Link (U17), Karri Currier (U17), Michelle Enyert
(U18/U of Portland), Taylor Canatsey (U16). If there are others who have
been left off please let us know. Congratulations Girls!
No one gave us any details how the games went but when photos came in
from back to back tournament championships upon their return from high
school. Congratulations on the La Jolla Nomads and So Cal United U15
tournament championships...keep up the hard work.

WIN INAGURAL CHAMPIONS CUP TITLE!
ORLANDO
(April 16, 2006) - Southern California Blues won the inaugural US Club
Soccer Champions Cup title on Easter Sunday, April 16 at Disney's Wide
World of Sports Complex. The country's elite clubs brought their U13, U15
and U17 teams to Orlando, Fla. April 13-16 to determine the top clubs by
competing on the field. Final Champions Cup club standings, results and
photos of the victors are all available at www.usclubsoccer.org.
Three clubs: CASL, FC DELCO (PA) and the Southern California Blues; entered
the final day of Champions Cup play in contention for the girls' championship
as each club earned berths into two first- place matches plus a third-place
match. After the Blues fell 1-0in
the U13 title game to CASL; defeated the Internationals (OH), 2-0, in the
U15 third-place game; and edged FC DELCO, 2-1, to win the U17 bracket,
they had to sweat out the girls' U15 title match between CASL and FC DELCO.
CASL, who had first place U13 and fourth place U17 finishes to their credit,
could have taken the Champions Cup crown by defeating FC DELCO's U15s.
In a scoreless match that required overtime, FC DELCO's Ahren Lewis served
a 30-yard free kick into the penalty
box with seven minutes remaining in the second extra 10-minute period.
Teammate Taylor Thompson powered her header past the CASL goalkeeper, who
got a hand on the ball but couldn't keep it from crossing the goal line
to give the Blues the inaugural Champions Cup title (click photo on right
to enlarge).
"My club winning this event, it makes me so proud to know that we all came together," added Blues U17 outside midfielder Nicki Friedberg (left). "We all were pretty much in the same hotel and we were rooting each other on. It was a good bonding experience because outside of tournaments, you're not unified. In [the Champions Cup], you just formed a big cohesive family and we were victorious. It was amazing."
2005-2006 STATE CUP
TWO BLUES
TEAMS CAPTURE STATE CUP
A
few weeks ago, before we started getting this rain, the U10 & U11 Blues brought
home the club's 24th & 25th State Championship. If you haven't seen it,
David Naimie...oh he is Mary's husband, put together a wonderful video for
the U10's and you can see it right here. You will need the Real Player plug-in;
hopefully you have cable because the file is big and could take some time
to load.
Our U9 Blue team almost
brought home the trifecta but were toppled in the final. Congratulations
Baby Blues, you have set the tone for the rest of our teams. Following the
State Cup the Blues held tryouts for these teams and most of them are posted
on the new Teams page.
In
a huge state cup surprise the Rob Rennie's U12 Blue team upset high ranked
opponents throughout as they battled their way to the finals. It was in the
finals vs a strong West Coast team that the Cinderella dream came to an end
losing a tough overtime match in penalty kicks. Chris Vaught's Blues U12
went down in windy Lancaster in the round of 16. Joining them in their early
exit at the round of 16 were both U13 Blues teams.
Older Blues teams
returned to the practice fields after their CIF (high school) season to prepare
for the State Cup and attended numerous tournaments to regain their previous
form. All the while many of these older teams were in the process of showing
their stuff for the many college coaches who were in attendance
at their competitions. Make sure to check out the new and improved Graduates page
which has lots of great information about the recruiting and college selection
process.
OLDER
BLUES TEAMS COMPETE BUT FALL SHORT
This season's state cup was a tale of two cities when it comes to results
on the field. While the younger Blues won two state championships (U10 &
U11) and had two finalists (U9 & U12 Blue), our older teams while competitive
failed to win any state championships. While the U14 Blue ran into the Surf
in the round of 16 going down 1-0, Tad's Blues U14 took it all the way to
penalty kicks in the semifinals before losing to So Cal United in a game
that could have gone either way. The U15 Blue team were knocked out of the
cup in the round of 32 unfortunately having to meet up with their sister
Blues U15 defending national champions. The Blues U15 team would get as far
as the semifinals where they would once again meet the Slammers in a dramatic
rematch of last year's semis. This time the story would be different as the
powerful Slammers would outlast the Blues defeating them 1-0 in the last
moments of overtime. Blues U16 got to the round of 16 before losing to OJSC
Barcelona. Randy Dodge's Blues U17 lost to FC Barcelona in the quarterfinals
in the last moments of overtime. U17 Blue were not able to advance out of
group while our Blues U18 team were defeated 2-1 in the finals of state cup.
All in all our Blues teams were quite competitive in the cup getting to many
of the later rounds and knockout games. Better luck next season.
With state cup over it is time to reflect on the true mission of the Blues
providing an environment where our players can grow as human beings, students
and soccer players. Please take a look at the alumni
page to see where the
many talented graduates of 2006 will attend college. Congratulations girls.
