2002-2003 Season Review

[Brazil Wins Cup] [Summer Tournaments] [CSL] [State Cup] [Regionals]

BRAZIL WINS FIFTH WORLD CUP!

If you had your head in the sand this summer, in case you had not heard Brazil recaptured the World Cup Title they lost to France in 1998. The tournament was held in June and if you want further information on what took place in Japan you can click the World Cup Logo on the right to go to the FIFA Official World Cup Page. The page has all the information on Teams, Schedules, and Results. Blues news has made a commitment to personally attend the 2006 World Cup which will be held in Germany so start saving if you want to make the trip.

While the World Cup was a minor distraction from the true soccer significance of the Blues, this year the Blues kicked off the season in mid July with an impressive celebration of the 2002 graduating class at the Fiesta Fundraiser put on by Joan Stern berg.

At the start of the season long time president Dave Mildrew retired, elections were held and Dan Lucier was chosen to fill his position. Luckily the Blues were able to retain services of long time financial manager Jim Irwin. Both Dave and Jim continue to stay involved will the club. These two have contributed a great deal to the club and will enter the Blues Wall of Fame; thanks guys for all you have done and for all you continue to do for us!

U9 Blues Win 2002 Pegasus Championship!
SUMMER TOURNAMENT SEASON

Prior to the beginning of the season the Blues proudly added several new teams and coaches with the hopes of providing an opportunity for more players to grow in our environment. We welcome Chris Kale's U10 & U18 team along with Alex Fusco's U15 girls. Ron Downer also rejoins the Blues coaching staff after having worked with several other clubs in the area. Welcome home Ron! In their first ever tournament as Blues coming over from the Pacific Soccer Club, Ron & Chris Kale guided their team to the 2002 U09 Pegasus Gold Championship (left); congratulations girls.

Not to be outdone, Alex Fusco's Blues U15 Blue team won the Capistrano Cup championship a couple of weeks later with the help of a couple of Tad's Blues U15 team (left). Wanting to get in on the action, Chris Vaught's Blues U10 Blue team (below/left) also won the U10 2002 Capo Cup winning their 4 games by a combined score of 16-0. The 02-03 U12 Blues went back to back winning their second consecutive Slammers Tournament (below/right). The girls will be entering the fierce competition of the CSL Gold Division for the first time. U15 Capo Cup Champs!

Also worth mentioning here too was Chris Kale's U10 Blues Surf Championship (right). The Summer soccer season concluded with the hosting of the Blues Cup Labor Day tournament which in its first season went surprisingly well. Thanks in part to tournament director Mike Schiffer and his merry band of volunteers too numerous to mention here. U10 Surf Cup Champs!

With the conclusion of the League Cup Tournament the 2002-03 Coast Soccer League ended. League play was extremely competitive and no doubt all involved gained valuable experience which will carry over into future play. You can review CSL results by clicking the CSL logo on the left and logging on to their web site. Of course if you don't care about anyone else on your far left is a Blues only CSL table of results. While we are proud of each and every one of our teams regardless of league results, still we are most proud of our graduates and the opportunities they have created for themselves with regards to their future education. By the way, check out this article written in the Orange County Register regarding Blues Alumni at UCLA.

BLUES YOUNGER STATE CUP RESULTS!

While older Blues teams were competing in their respective high school campaigns, younger Blues teams began State Cup in February; U10 and U11 Blues fared pretty well to say the least.

Our U10 Lime Team failed to qualify for knockout play while the U10 Blue team put up a great fight before being eliminated in the Sweet 16. Chris Kale's U10 Girls were eliminated in Semifinal play.

On the U11 side of things, congratulations go out to both teams; Chito's U11 Blue Team qualified for the Round of 32 before being eliminated, while to the surprise of the entire So Cal Youth Soccer Community, the Magician of Mission Viejo, coach Tad Bobak has guided his U11 girls into the Finals which were held February 16th at the Lancaster Soccer Complex. Wouldn't you know it, Tad and the Girls won the whole darn thing in a windy final over Glendora by a slim score of 1-0 giving the club it's 19th State Cup Title. The goal was scored in the first half of an even game on a penalty kick converted by Allie Harrison when Sarah Halverson slashed through the area and got taken down before she could get her shot off. Honorable mention goes out to the entire team for a tremendous defensive effort in preserving the advantage for the rest of the game. Great job U10 & U11 girls and coaches; way to represent!

U12 and U13 Blues teams then took National Cup center stage in mid February at the Blast and CYSA-South Complexes in San Bernardino. The U13 Blues made up for last season getting to the semifinals before being overmatched by the San Diego Surf. In a mirrored performance of last season, the U12 Blues put up a great fight before losing 1-0 to the same SD Surf who went on to win it all. MORE 2002-2003 STATE CUP NEWS!

If you didn't know Brazil won the cup then you may not know that Blues coach Tad Bobak had an incredible 2002-03 season and without a doubt was the Blues coach of the year if not the decade. Tad is one of the few if not the only coach to have won both a boys (U19) and girls (U16) national championship. What is more is that last year he won an adult national championship with our adult Blues.

This past season Tad was up to his old and I mean "old" tricks again. Tad has won the CYSA-South coach of the year award twice but this past season may have been his best ever. Not only did he guide the U11 Blues to an improbable state championship but he proceeded to take his injury riddled U15Blues team through the toughest schedule en route to winning his second state championship of the year. The U15 Blues represented CYSA-South in the regional tournament which was held in Hawaii. Late breaking sad Blues news for the team had them going down to defeat in the regional semifinals by the score of 3-2 vs Northern California. Blues news has obtained copy from one of it's roving reporters on some of the events at the regional tournament along with some photos. Click here to read the account of regionals from Jamie Petrossi.

All said these girls had a miraculous year and no doubt the experience they gained will help their confidence as people and players both on and off the field. Girls we are proud of you! You can click the team photo below for a big version of the championship team.

GREAT JOB GIRLS!
